I decided to make my own DIY taste safe Sand, two different ways, For Nova’s sensory bin. Using Ingredients right in the kitchen. I love to find new ways for my girl to explore and play but unfortunately like many other little ones putting things in their mouth comes along with the territory. So, with this easy DIY she doesn’t have to miss out on any of the fun, and I can relax just a bit knowing she isn’t putting toxins in her mouth.
The first method is with Cheerios and the second with baked Flour. I will say me and Bella’s favorite May be the 2nd because it resembles kinetic sand but I think Nova definitely prefers the first!
Method #1
What You Need:
- Original or Honey Cheerios
- Blender
- Tools for Scooping and pouring (i.e Measuring cups, Small bowls, spoons, small sand toys, etc.)
What To Do:
Step 1: Distribute 4-5 cups of Cheerios into a blender
Step 2: Blend Cheerios on High Speed until desired consistency or until it resembles the look of sand
Step 3: Pour out into a sensory bin or plastic container and add tools for scooping and pouring, and let your little one enjoy.
Method #2
What You Need:
- 2 Cups All purpose Flour
- 1/4 Cup Vegetable Oil
- Raised Baking sheet or pan
- Large Mixing Bowl
- Tools for Scooping, Pouring and Molding
What To Do:
Step 1: In A raised baking pan distribute 2 cups of All Purpose floor evenly and bake at 350 Degrees for 15 Minutes.
Step 2: Remove from oven and Pour into Large mixing bowl and add 1/4 cup Vegetable Oil and Mix until fully combined (The consistency of the Flour would have changed in color to a bit darker and be able to stick together if molded)
Step 3: Let cool and distribute into sensory bin with play tools for scooping, pouring and molding.
You can even use this to make dirt for more play options. The possibilities are endless to how you child can use their imagination when playing with this.
Extra Tip: Add Food coloring for more fun and learning. Adult Supervision advised at all times for Toddlers under 2.
