Ultimate Family Itinerary: Spend One Fun Day in Savannah

If you’re looking for a fun family road trip destination just a few hours away from Atlanta, look no further than Savannah, Georgia! We recently took a family reunion road trip to this charming city, and I was amazed at how much it had to offer—especially for the kids! With its rich history, interactive museums, and delicious food, there’s something for everyone.

Here’s my 1-day itinerary for families with kids. Trust me, you’ll want to steal this one!

Explore the Savannah Children’s Museum

📍 655 Louisville Rd, Savannah, GA 31401

Kick off your Savannah adventure at the Savannah Children’s Museum. Located on the historic site of the old Central of Georgia Railway Depot, this museum is an absolute must-visit for young kids! With interactive exhibits and hands-on learning activities, the kids can explore everything from nature and science to art and history. It’s a great place to get those curious minds working and burn off some energy!

Take a Train Ride at the Georgia State Railroad Museum

📍 655 Louisville Rd, Savannah, GA 31401

Just a short walk away, head over to the Georgia State Railroad Museum. This museum is a hidden gem for train enthusiasts and anyone fascinated by history. Kids can see real steam engines, take a train ride (if available), and explore the railroad yard. The interactive exhibits allow little ones to engage with history in a fun, hands-on way. Plus, the historic trains make for some great photo ops!

Treat the Family to Savannah Seafood Shack

📍 116 E Broughton St, Savannah, GA 31401

By now, you’ll have worked up an appetite, so it’s time to grab some delicious seafood at the Savannah Seafood Shack! Located in the heart of downtown, this casual eatery offers some of the best local seafood in a family-friendly atmosphere. Try the fried shrimp, fish tacos, or the signature crab cakes. Trust me, your taste buds will thank you!

Sweet Treats at Byrd Cookie Co.

📍 102 E Broughton St, Savannah, GA 31401

After lunch, walk over to Byrd Cookie Co., a Savannah favorite that has been baking delicious cookies since 1924. This shop offers a variety of cookies, including their famous key lime and pecan shortbread cookies. My especially loved their fun and whimsical Rice Krispy treats. It’s a fun spot to grab a snack and take a treat home for later.

Treat Yourself at River Street Sweets

📍 32 East Broughton Street, Savannah, GA 31401

No trip to Savannah is complete without a visit to River Street Sweets. With two locations to choose from either right by the River or Downtown across from Byrd’s, this candy store is the perfect place to satisfy your sweet tooth with treats like saltwater taffy, caramel popcorn, and pralines – Which we tried for the first time and loved. I could not leave without grabbing a few scoops of their homemade ice cream and let’s just say it definitely melts in your mouth. Come prepared and walk in if you dare because there’s no counting calories allowed.

Dinner at Chazito’s Latin Cuisine

📍 217 US-80, Pooler, GA 31322

End your Savannah adventure with a delicious Latin meal at Chazito’s Latin Cuisine in nearby Pooler, GA. This family-friendly restaurant offers flavorful Latin dishes ranging from tacos and burritos to plantains and mofongo. Whether you’re in the mood for a hearty entrée or lighter fare, Chazito’s has something for everyone. The food was so good we ate here 3 different times while visiting during our trip. And if you need a little help ordering go ahead and try the Empanadas! You will wish you never had another. It’s the perfect spot to relax after a fun-filled day in Savannah, especially on their outdoor patio with yard games and lively music.

Savannah has so much to offer for families looking for a fun and memorable day trip. Whether you’re exploring interactive museums, enjoying local seafood, or treating yourself to sweet delights, there’s something for everyone. This 1-day itinerary is the perfect way to make the most of your visit, with activities that are as exciting as they are educational. Pack up the car, hit the road, and get ready for an unforgettable family adventure!
